Hunting Opportunities Abound at Charles Ray Nix WMA
JACKSON - January is an excellent month for archery, youth, and rabbit hunters at Charles Ray Nix Wildlife Management Area (WMA).  Located a few miles west of Sardis in north Mississippi, this WMA offers approximately 4,000 acres of grassland and woodland habitat.

From January 1-31, adults may hunt deer with archery equipment only.  However, during this time, youth hunters (those 15 years of age and younger) may hunt deer with any approved weapon, which includes modern rifles.  When hunting on WMAs, youth hunters must be in the presence and under the direct supervision of a licensed or exempt hunter of at least 21 years of age.  Legal bucks and antlerless deer may be harvested and statewide bag limits are in effect.

The rabbit population at Nix WMA has increased over time as a result of recent habitat  improvements. Specifically, the abundance of old fields provide excellent rabbit hunting opportunities.  The rabbit hunting season at Nix WMA is the same as the statewide season and runs through Feb. 28.  The statewide bag limit applies.
