Late Season Dove Hunting Opportunity Approaching
JACKSON - The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks wants to remind hunters that the third and final segment of Mississippi's dove season is quickly approaching. The North Zone final dove season is December 20 - January 12. The South Zone final dove season is December 14 - January 12. These late seasons provide dove hunting opportunity that is much different than the traditional September opener. More doves are migrating south into the state; these birds tend to travel in much larger flocks this time of year. These large flocks of birds can make for a much different and exciting dove hunting experience compared to earlier seasons. The late seasons also provide a great afternoon opportunity to compliment concurrent hunting seasons. Many duck hunters, for example, enjoy pairing a morning duck hunt with an afternoon dove hunt this time of year.
Public land dove hunting opportunities vary throughout the state. Many Wildlife Management Area (WMA) dove fields are open for the late seasons. Hunters need to review WMA regulations before heading to the field. During the late dove seasons, doves may also be taken during permitted waterfowl hunts on WMAs that offer limited draw hunts.
