Malmaison WMA Public Meeting Scheduled for August 12
JACKSON - The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks (MDWFP) will host a public meeting regarding changes to future water level management in the Malmaison Wildlife Management Area (WMA) greentree reservoir (GTR). The meeting will be on August 12 at 6 p.m. and will be held in the Grenada County Building located at 1240 Fairground Road in Grenada.
Malmaison WMA, located in Leflore and Grenada counties, averages over 2,000 waterfowl hunting man-days each season. One of the main attractions for waterfowl hunting on Malmaison WMA is the GTR area. Each winter, the GTR is pumped artificially from three irrigation wells to provide waterfowl habitat and hunting opportunities. Due to pumping capabilities, the GTR offers waterfowl hunting even during extremely dry years.
Habitat inside the GTR is declining due to the current flooding regime, and MDWFP staff has recommended water level management changes to slow this decline. This change in water management will continue to provide ample waterfowl hunting opportunity, while also improving waterfowl habitat quality and reducing negative impacts to timber.
At the public meeting, MDWFP staff will present future water level management practices for the GTR. Natural resource professionals from Mississippi State University will also be present. The presentation will be followed by an open discussion to obtain public comments.
