Special Youth Dove Hunting Opportunities on WMAs
JACKSON - In Mississippi, fall officially begins with fast-action dove hunts on warm September afternoons. Dove hunting is an excellent opportunity to introduce youth to hunting and shooting sports. The social atmosphere of dove hunting also introduces youth to the experience of the hunting camp tradition and provides opportunity for quality time spent in the outdoors with family and friends. The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks (MDWFP) seeks to provide a unique hunting opportunity for youth on our Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs). This year there will be two special youth dove hunts held on Black Prairie and Mahannah WMAs.
The Black Prairie youth dove hunt will be held on September 1, 2014, and the Mahannah youth hunt will be held on September 13, 2014. These hunts are open to all youth 15 years of age and younger. A parent or guardian over 21 years of age must accompany each youth hunter during the entire hunt. Youth hunters must check in the day of the hunt at 11 a.m. The hunt will begin at 2 p.m. and conclude at sunset. Special events during the day of the hunt will include skeet shooting, safety discussions by MDWFP law enforcement officers, and a provided lunch.
Participants must register online to attend these hunts. Applications will be accepted from August 1 - August 25. The Black Prairie hunt will be limited to 50 youth, and the Mahannah hunt will be limited to 100 youth.
