Water Contact and Fish Consumption Advisory on Three Streams in Wayne County
JACKSON -The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) issued a temporary water contact advisory on July 1 for Eucutta and Nicholson Creeks and a nearby portion of the Chickasawhay River. This advisory was issued due to oil spilling from a nearby well in Wayne County. Approximately three miles of Eucutta Creek and Nicholson Creek and 12 miles of the Chickasawhay River near Boice were affected. Clean-up efforts to remove the oil will continue for several days. MDEQ recommends that people avoid swimming, wading, and boating in these waters. In addition to the water contact advisory, people should also avoid eating fish from the affected area until further notice. Waters not included in this advisory will remain open to all fishing and boating activities, and all fish remain safe to consume.
