Avoid Disturbing Ground Nesting Birds
JACKSON - The months of May and June are the peak nesting season for many birds. Some species, including wild turkeys and bobwhite quail, nest directly on the ground, often nesting adjacent to roadways, along field margins, or near forest edges, and proximity to these areas can lead to their disturbance by human activities. In the event that nest sites are discovered, the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks (MDWFP) urges citizens leave the area immediately and avoid unnecessary disturbance around the nest area in order to lessen the threat of undue detrimental impact. When feasible, the MDWFP recommends delaying pasture maintenance activities such as mowing or haying until July 1 to ensure the safety of nesting wild turkeys in these areas.
