Bird Banding Efforts Ongoing in Mississippi
JACKSON - MDWFP's
wildlife biologists and conservation officers recently completed a
rocket netting workshop at the Turcotte Education Center near Ross
Barnett Reservoir. The purpose of this workshop, taught by the U.S.
Fish and Wildlife Service and USDA Wildlife Services, was to
instruct personnel who band wood ducks how to safely capture and
handle birds.
Each summer,
MDWFP staff and permitted volunteers band mourning doves and wood
ducks throughout Mississippi to better
understand juvenile and adult survival (how long a bird lives),
harvest rates (how many birds are harvested), and migration and
dispersal patterns (where birds
go). All
of these data are provided to the National
Bird Banding Lab where it is
entered into a central database that holds all information from
every bird banded by a permitted bander. These data help the U.S.
Fish and Wildlife Service and the MDWFP develop sound hunting
regulations and gain useful information to improve migratory bird
management in Mississippi.
If a
hunter recovers a band from a migratory bird, it is very important
to report the recovered band to the Bird Banding Lab. The band can
be reported on the internet at http://www.reportband.gov/
or by calling
1-800-327-BAND (2263). After reporting
the band, the Bird Banding
Lab will send the hunter a certificate of
appreciation, which tells where and when the bird was
banded.
