Late Primitive Weapon and Archery Season for Deer Opens January 18th
JACKSON - Archery/Primitive Weapon Season for deer opens Friday, January 18th and runs through Thursday, January 31st in all deer zones. Antlerless deer and zone legal bucks are eligible for harvest in the Hill and Delta Zones on both private and open public land. In the Southeast Zone antlerless deer and zone legal bucks are eligible for harvest on private lands, and only legal bucks can be harvested on open public land. Open public lands may include National Forests and Corps of Engineers lands that have statewide seasons without special regulations.
According to Lann M. Wilf, North Region Deer Program Biologist, the rut has peaked over most of the state, but is likely in full swing further south. "Hunters can expect to see some buck movement as they search for estrous does. Also, food plot use may be higher during the late season because most other food resources are limited by this time. Thus, we usually see some nice bucks taken across the state during the late archery and primitive weapons season."
Legal weapons include archery, primitive firearms, and crossbows. "Primitive Firearms," for the purpose of hunting deer, are defined as single or double barreled muzzle-loading rifles of at least .38 caliber; OR single shot, breech loading, metallic cartridge rifles (.35 caliber or larger) and replicas, reproductions, or reintroductions of those type rifles with an exposed hammer; OR single or double-barreled muzzle-loading shotguns, with single ball or slug. All muzzle-loading primitive firearms must use black powder or a black powder substitute with percussion caps, #209 shotgun primers, or flintlock ignition.
