*Eagle Lake is an oxbow lake formed by the Mississippi River. The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks (MDWFP), oversees the fisheries resources and provides regular fishing reports

Eagle Lake is a 4,700-acre oxbow formed by the Mississippi River and is cutoff from the river by the mainline levee system. Water levels are controlled via the Muddy Bayou control structure operated by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Eagle Lake is one of the largest oxbows in Mississippi and is a popular destination for bream and crappie anglers.

Weekly fishing reports will return in February. Below are some hints for fishing during the winter and early spring.

SpeciesDetail
Largemouth BassLargemouth bass can be caught during the winter. Try pitching jigs, shaky heads, soft stick baits, crawfish imitations, and drop shot rigs into and around the structure on the ends of piers. Spinnerbaits are typically good this time of year as well. The pad stems in front of Buck Chute and in Float Row can hold good fish during sunny days. Try throwing soft stick baits, spinnerbaits or boot tail swimbaits through open areas between the stems. The bridge pilings and docks in Muddy Bayou can hold bass when current is present.
CrappieCrappie can be caught throughout the winter off the ends of deeper piers, especially piers with added structure. Fish slowly for crappie with minnows or jigs and try fishing at different depths.
BreamBream will be at various depths during the colder months. Target these fish with redworms, crickets or even small jigs. Another good area to catch bream is near Muddy Bayou around deep structure. Bream will be at depths from 3 – 8 feet deep. Sometimes the bite can be slow during the winter time because fish metabolism slows down. The best bait to use is small worms.
CatfishCatfish can be caught during the winter, but are often slow to bite. Try worms, liver, or cut bait fished on or near the bottom. The western side of the lake is popular for catfish, and anglers often use rod & reel, trotlines, and limblines.
White BassHybrid striped bass and white bass can be caught with crankbaits and tailspinners along flats or fishing open areas out from the piers. Fishing near the mouth of Muddy Bayou can be good when there is current.
