Weekly fishing reports will return in February. Below are some hints for fishing during the winter and early spring.
Species | Detail |
---|---|
Largemouth Bass | Largemouth bass can be caught during the winter. Try pitching jigs, shaky heads, soft stick baits, crawfish imitations, and drop shot rigs into and around the structure on the ends of piers. Spinnerbaits are typically good this time of year as well. The pad stems in front of Buck Chute and in Float Row can hold good fish during sunny days. Try throwing soft stick baits, spinnerbaits or boot tail swimbaits through open areas between the stems. The bridge pilings and docks in Muddy Bayou can hold bass when current is present. |
Crappie | Crappie can be caught throughout the winter off the ends of deeper piers, especially piers with added structure. Fish slowly for crappie with minnows or jigs and try fishing at different depths. |
Bream | Bream will be at various depths during the colder months. Target these fish with redworms, crickets or even small jigs. Another good area to catch bream is near Muddy Bayou around deep structure. Bream will be at depths from 3 – 8 feet deep. Sometimes the bite can be slow during the winter time because fish metabolism slows down. The best bait to use is small worms. |
Catfish | Catfish can be caught during the winter, but are often slow to bite. Try worms, liver, or cut bait fished on or near the bottom. The western side of the lake is popular for catfish, and anglers often use rod & reel, trotlines, and limblines. |
White Bass | Hybrid striped bass and white bass can be caught with crankbaits and tailspinners along flats or fishing open areas out from the piers. Fishing near the mouth of Muddy Bayou can be good when there is current. |
