The Mississippi Museum of Natural Science has a small collection of insects and terrestrial invertebrates containing approximately 6000 specimens. There are approximately 5500 pinned insects, the majority of which are dragonflies and damselflies (Odonata), butterflies and moths (Lepidoptera), and Beetles (Coleoptera). The vast majority of specimens are from Mississippi , although there are specimens from neighboring states. In addition to the pinned insects, the collection contains fluid-preserved insects, spiders, and native and non-native scorpions, and parasitic invertebrates. To date only the lepidopterans and the odonates have been partially cataloged. All pinned specimens are arranged by order and family within cabinets.
