The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks (MDWFP) is working with Mississippi State University (MSU) to gain a better understanding of the perceptions surrounding Mississippi black bears through a randomized statewide public survey. This survey is the first public survey addressing bears in Mississippi since the early 2000s. As much has changed in the bear population in the last 20 years, MDWFP and MSU would like to take this opportunity to gain insight into more current feedback.

There are a total of 4,000 surveys going out by mail: 2,000 targeting landowners and 2,000 targeting hunters. MDWFP encourages individuals who receive the survey to take the time to fill it out completely. This data will be monumental in research to better understand the sociological impacts of the Mississippi black bear.
