MDWFP SRT deployed to assist in Hurricane Helene security and law enforcement

The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks’(MDWFP) Law Enforcement Special Response Team (SRT) was deployed at 7:00 a.m. on October 15 to North Carolina to assist communities in response to severe weather damage associated with Hurricane Helene. 

At the request of the state of North Carolina and the Emergency Management Assistance Compact (EMAC), 25 MDWFP SRT personnel have been deployed to provide support in security and enforcement efforts. 

The SRT unit constantly trains to effectively assist communities during natural disasters. “Security and enforcement is a task that this unit is uniquely trained and qualified for,” said Captain Steven Westerfield, SRT Commander. “Our thoughts are with those affected by Hurricane Helene and with the personnel assisting with recovery.” 

“Our SRT is always ready to deploy, in or out of state, during natural disasters such as Hurricane Helene,” said MDWFP Executive Director, Lynn Posey. “We commend our officers along with other first responders for their efforts in assisting our neighbors in North Carolina as they recover from the devastation of Hurricane Helene.”
