Inspiring the Next Generation of Conservationists

Wild About Mississippi (WAM!) was created to spark a passion for the outdoors and conservation in kids from grades 2-6. Through engaging content, fun activities, and fascinating facts, WAM! encourages young readers to ask questions, explore the unique wildlife of Mississippi, and take pride in the natural treasures right in their backyard. Whether at home, in the classroom, or out on an adventure, WAM! offers something for everyone to enjoy.

Each issue of WAM! dives into Mississippi’s rich biodiversity, focusing on native wildlife and plants. Every edition highlights a featured creature and a plant ID to help kids learn more about species they may not encounter in their everyday lives. We also include outdoor activities—ranging from simple crafts to hands-on experiments—that use common household materials, making participation easy and fun. Add to that some wildlife-themed jokes, trivia with fascinating facts, and tips for exploring state parks and facilities, and WAM! becomes the ultimate guide to Mississippi’s outdoors for curious young minds.

WAM! is more than just a resource—it’s an opportunity. Whether kids are filling time at home, teachers are incorporating it into lesson plans, or families are bonding over a craft, WAM! is designed to be flexible and accessible. Share your experiences with us on Facebook (@MississippiDepartmentofWildlifeFisheriesandParks) or Instagram (@mdwfponline) using the hashtag #WAM! We’d love to see how your family is making the most of this resource.

How to Get WAM!

WAM! is published twice a year, in the Fall and Spring, with physical copies available at Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks events and the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science. Can’t attend in person? No problem! Download a free PDF copy directly from our website. While the ideal print size is 17x11 inches, you can also print it on standard 8.5x11 paper—it may just be a bit cozier to read!

Our hope is that WAM! inspires kids to develop hobbies, explore their surroundings, and even consider careers in conservation. By celebrating Mississippi’s great outdoors, we aim to nurture a sense of pride and wonder that will last a lifetime.
