All three of MDWFP's Shooting Facilities provide comprehensive on-site handgun courses tailored to various skill levels, from beginners to advanced shooters. Whether you are just starting out or looking to refine your expertise, our courses are designed to meet your needs.

Registration for classes close at 10:00 AM the Monday before the classes.

Classes Offered:

Basic Handgun 100 Class

For ages 18 and up. 

(6 hours of lecture/classroom work and 2 hours of work on the firing range)  

9:00 AM to 6:00 PM

The Level 100 Course is the perfect course for someone with little to no handgun experience but is interested in learning more about the fundamentals of safety and marksmanship.  Whether you have just purchased a handgun and would like to feel more confident, or you are interested in purchasing one and are not sure what would best meet your needs, this is the course for you. 

We begin with a thorough safety lecture and then familiarize you with two standard firearms – pistols and revolvers. We teach you proper safety and operation while in a classroom setting and then head to the range for practice.  

Topics covered: 

  • Proper stance 
  • Hold the firearm 
  • Utilize the sights 
  • Manipulate the trigger 
  • Mitigate recoil 
  • The Level 100 Course is usually limited to 8 shooters per class. This allows our instructors to spend adequate one-on-one time with each participant.

  

Students are required to bring: eye & ear protection and materials to take notes. 

Cost: $40.00

Basic Handgun 200 Class

For ages 18 and up. 

Prerequisite: Basic Handgun 100 Course 

(2 hours of lecture, 3 hours of shooting on the firing range, and 3 hours of learning how to take apart, clean, and maintain your firearm.)  

9:00 AM to 6:00 PM

The Level 200 course is designed to build on the fundamentals learned in our Level 100 Course, allowing students to practice using their personal firearm under the guidance of one of our instructors.  

Topics covered: 

  • Level 100 Course Reminder 
  • Range Guidance 
  • Handgun maintenance (how to take down, clean, and maintain your firearm) 
  • The Level 200 course is usually limited to 8 shooters per class. This allows our instructors to spend adequate one-on-one time with each participant.  

 

Students are required to bring: 

  • Your personal handgun 
  • Minimum of 200 rounds of ammunition 
  • A gun belt that fits your handgun and holster (should be rigid - shouldn’t flex or move as the handgun is holstered and drawn) 
  • Eye and ear protection 
  • Cleaning kit for your handgun (should include: cleaning rod, jag or slotted tip, bronze bore brush, cotton cleaning patches, Q-tips, cotton pipe cleaners, cotton cloth to wipe the gun down, a towel or commercial cleaning mat, bore solvent, and gun oil.

Enhanced Carry Permit

For ages 21 and up. 

(6 hours of lecture, followed by 2 hours of shooting on the firing line) 

9:00 AM to 6:30 PM

The Enhanced Carry Class is to qualify the participant for the Mississippi Enhanced Carry Permit, as issued by the Mississippi Highway Patrol – Firearms Permit Unit. Our job in this course is to ensure you understand the legal requirements regarding concealed carry in Mississippi, that you are both safe and competent with your firearm, and to award you with the certification required for the issuing of a Mississippi Enhanced Carry Permit.  

Following the lecture, students must pass a 50-yard qualification test, which will be fired from 3 yards and 7 yards.  

Students are required to bring: 

  • Your personal handgun 
  • 100 rounds of ammunition 
  • Gunbelt and holster 
  • Eye and ear protection
