About The Park

Lake Lowndes State Park is located on a beautiful 150-acre lake and provides complete recreational facilities for individuals, families, and groups to enjoy the park. The park offers unlimited opportunities for fishing and camping, as well as three baseball/softball, tennis, two t-balls, and other organized sports. 

Mississippi University for Women (The "W") and Mississippi State University (MSU) are just a short drive to the west, making Lake Lowndes State Park the perfect place to stay during a football weekend at MSU or while visiting either campus.

Park Directions 

East Bound on Hwy 82:

  • Traveling Hwy 82 East to Columbus: You may take the downtown exit and travel Hwy 182 East to Hwy 69 South (right turn). About 5 miles out, you will turn left onto Lake Lowndes Road. It will bring you into the park
  • You may take the exit to East Columbus at the Hwy 50/12 Exit: Exit to the right and stay to your right going off the ramp. You will go 1 mile to a 3-way stop. Take a left, and you will be on Gardner Blvd and heading to Hwy 69 South. About 6 miles out, you will take Lake Lowndes Road to your left when the road becomes a Y shape. This road will take you into the park.
  • You may take the Lee Stokes Road Exit to your right. At the Shell Fuel Center, you will take a right onto Hwy 182 going west for about 2 miles. Take a left at the flashing light onto New Hope Road. Follow the signs to Lake Lowndes State Park.

North Bound on Hwy 45:

  • Take the Hwy 82 East Exit toward Columbus, then use the same directions as East Bound on Hwy 82.

South Bound on Hwy 45:

  • Go South on 45. Approximately 2 miles from Walmart (right side), there will be a light at Walmart; go straight. There will be 3 more lights. You will see a Columbus Air Force Model Plane on the left before you go under Hwy 82 bypass. Get over to the left to go up the ramp toward Tuscaloosa, AL. Then you will be on the Hwy 82 bypass going east.; use the same directions as East Bound on Hwy 82.

West Bound on Hwy 82:

  • About 1 mile after you cross the Alabama/Mississippi State Line, take the Lee Stokes Road Exit. Turn left off the exit ramp onto Lee Stokes Road. At the stop sign by the Shell Fuel Center, take a right onto 182 West and drive approximately 2 miles to New Hope Road. At the flashing light, turn left and follow the signs to the park.

Things To Do

Disc Golf, Gymnasium, Picnic Area/Pavilions, Playground, Playing Fields, Tennis, Equestrian and Nature Trails. Lake Lowndes also offers 150-acres of Freshwater Fishing, a Boat Launch, and Water Skiing. As of April 2024, the park also offers kayak rentals.

Lake Lowndes offers an 18-hole disc golf course that winds through the pines and over the beautiful hills. The course is open to the public free of charge; however, the normal entrance fee is required. 

For all disc golf lovers: Make sure you stay updated about disc golf tournaments held at Lake Lowndes via the web or call the park office at (662) 328-2110. The Whispering Pines Disc Golf Course is part of the Southern National Disc Golf Association.

Activity Building

Activity Building

The Multi-Sports Center is available by reservation only and features basketball and a game room with a pool table and ping-pong tables. Behind the visitor's center, there is also an amphitheater. For more information or to make a reservation, please contact the park office at (662) 328-2110.

The Meeting Room, situated inside the activity building, comfortably seats 75 people and features a den-type setting with a couch and chairs, 3 card tables, and a fireplace. Additionally, this space features a kitchen that includes a counter for workspace, a sink, a microwave, tables, and seats.

Picnic Sites/Pavilions

Picnic Area/Pavilions

The Park's lakeside picnic sites are equipped with tables and a few feature grills. A large pavilion is available by reservation only, providing the perfect spot for a family reunion, company picnic, or church or school outing with an absolutely stunning view of Lake Lowndes. The large pavilion should accommodate close to 65 - 70 people. For more information or to reserve the pavilion, please contact the park office at (662) 328-2110.

Marina Pavilion

The marina pavilion is located in the boat launch area. It accommodates 20 people inside and about 30 people outside. It has kitchen counter space, a refrigerator, and a sink. It is great for parties and family gatherings. The marina pavilion is available by reservation only. For more information, please contact the park office at (662) 328-2110. Smoking is not allowed in any Mississippi government building.

Playground

Playground equipment is also available at the park. It is located in the day-use area of Lake Lowndes, which houses the park's lakeside picnic sites. Picnic sites are equipped with tables, and most have grills. The playground features swings, slides, jungle gyms, an outdoor basketball goal, a volleyball net, and much more!

 

Tennis

The tennis complex features six tennis courts for day play only. A quarter-mile walking track is located on the grounds near the tennis complex. The track is paved and designed for walking, running, and jogging. Four laps around the track equals one mile.

Water Activities

Kayak Rentals

Day-use and overnight guests are encouraged to try out Lake Lowndes's newest addition to the park by renting a kayak at the front gate house between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Please call the park for more details. 

Fishing

Lake Lowndes offers 150-acres of freshwater fishing and water sports. The lake is well stocked with catfish, crappie, bass, and bream. A Mississippi fishing license is required for all persons between the ages of 16 and 65. Licenses may be purchased at the park office for a small fee. There is a daily fee to bank fish at Lake Lowndes, or you may purchase an Annual Bank Fishing Permit at the park office.

Boat Launch and Water Skiing

Lake Lowndes offers 150 acres of freshwater for fishing and water sports. A boat launch is available for persons with their own boats. There is a daily boat launching fee, or you may purchase an Annual Boat Launch Permit at the park office.

Water skiing, tubing, and jet skis are permitted on Lake Lowndes from March to September from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Idle speed is only permitted from October to February.

Gym

Lake Lowndes offers an indoor basketball court inside the Multi-Sports Center, which is the Visitor/Activity Building. The court is open by reservation only and can be reserved by the hour. Please contact the park office at (662) 328-2110 to reserve the gym.

Stay The Night

At Lake Lowndes State Park, 50 developed camping sites, a scenic wooded tent camping area, 6 Vacation Cabins, 2 Vacation Cottages, and Laundry Facilities are available for use. 

As of December 2023, The Friends of Lake Lowndes (a nonprofit organization) installed a community firepit for overnight campers to use to create lasting memories with new friends around the campfire. 

Developed Camping

The 50 lakeside sites available for RV camping feature water, electricity, and sewer, as well as 50/30/20amp connections. Each site has a picnic table and grill. A comfort station that features hot showers, washers and dryers, and a sitting area is located inside the campground. A central sewage dumping station is located beside the developed camping area before you turn into the campground. All campsites are available for reservations up to 13 months in advance; reservations are highly recommended. Smoking is not allowed in any Mississippi government building.

Monthly camping may be available. Please check with the park office for availability. 

The campground has a small playground for children and a community campfire with swings for events and gatherings.

Tent Camping

Lake Lowndes offers eight primitive tent camping sites in scenic wooded areas. Water and restrooms are within walking distance of the primitive camping area. Fires must be inside the designated fire ring. Call the park for more information. Tent camping is first come, first served. 

Vacation Cabins

Lake Lowndes State Park features six cabins that sleep six people. Each cabin is equipped with bed and bath linens and basic kitchen utensils. All cabins are furnished with a refrigerator, stove, and microwave, as well as a bathroom with a shower.

Cabins 1B, 3A, and 3B are handicapped accessible. Cabins 3A and 3B also have screened porches.

All six cabins feature a deck, grill, fire ring, picnic table, central heat and air conditioning, patio furniture, satellite TV, basic cookware, and utensils, and afford a lovely view of Lake Lowndes.

Four cabins have fireplaces and sit directly on the bank of Lake Lowndes. A boat dock is also available for the cabin guests. 

All cabins are available for reservation up to 13 months in advance; reservations are highly recommended.

Vacation Cottages

Lake Lowndes State Park features two cottages that sleep four people each.

Each cottage is equipped with two bedrooms. One room has a queen bed and the other room has a full size bed. Both cottages are furnished with bed and bath linens, refrigerator, stove, microwave, and coffee pot, as well as a bathroom with a shower/tub. Each cottage features a porch with patio furniture, grill, picnic table, satellite TV, basic cookware, utensils, and central heat and air conditioning, and affords a lovely view of Lake Lowndes.

All cottages are available for reservations up to 13 months in advance and are highly recommended.

Laundry Facilities

Laundry facilities are available inside the Campground Bathhouse. The washer/dryer accepts coins and credit cards.

Day Use
