Prentiss Walker Lake

Prentiss Walker Lake is a 81-acre lake 4 miles southwest of Mize off Hwy 35 in Smith County. The lake was constructed in 1962 and was originally named Lake Ross Barnett. The lake was closed for repairs in 1994 and reopened in 1997. Prentiss Walker is known for very large Bluegill and Redear sunfish.

Fishing Report - Updated 03/25/2025

BassBass fishing has been good as the water warms. Try trolling live shiners near creek channels and spawning flats, using dark colored soft plastics or jigs around drop-offs and cover or hit transition zones at dawn or dusk. 
Crappie Crappie fishing has been slow. Try trolling live minnows tight-lined in 15-25 feet of water along the creek channel. Fish small bright jigs (chartreuse or white) near timber or brush by the dam or stick to deep water.
BreamBream fishing has been good. Use crickets or redworms under a cork near shallow cover or channel edges. Tightline worms in 10-15 feet of water for redear and keep baits small and close to cover. 
Catfish Catfish fishing has been poor. Fish cut bait or nightcrawlers on the bottom near creek channel or along the dam. Baits such as chicken liver have also been popular.

Lake Regulations

  • Rod and reel or pole fishing is allowed. No trotlines, FFFD’s, jugs, yoyo’s, limblines, throwlines, or set hooks are allowed. 
  • Sport fishing licenses and fishing permits are required except on designated days during National Fishing and Boating Week. 
  • Fishing is not allowed from courtesy piers adjacent to boat ramps. 
  • Night fishing is allowed from the bank or boats which are in compliance with state and Coast Guard regulations.
  • Skiing is allowed on Friday, Sunday, Memorial Day, July 4th , and Labor Day from noon to sunset within ski area. 
  • Lake is designated as No Wake all other times.

Record Fish

Record fish must be weighed and verified by the lake manager, lake supervisor, or fisheries biologist. Anglers who catch a lake record fish will receive a certificate acknowledging their catch.
